Relationship between Body Mass Index and, Fat-Free Mass Index and Fat-Mass Index in Korean Population.
ABSTRACT
Because of fat-free mass (FFM) and body fat mass (BFM) change with age, height, and weight, it is difficult to determine whether individual subjects have low or high FFM or BFM. The fat-free mass index (FFMI, kg/㎡) and body fat mass index (BFMI, kg/㎡) are useful in evaluating body composition. The purpose of this study was to determine FFMI, BFMI, and percentage of body fat (%BF) ranges in subjects with low, normal, overweight, and obese BMI in Korean. The data were obtained from the Fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES V, 2010). The study contained a nationally representative sample of Korean adults (2,509 men, 3,268 women) aged 20 years or older. FFMI, BFMI, and %BF were calculated. FFMI values were 15.2 to 17.5 kg/㎡ for men and 13.1 to 14.8 kg/㎡ for women within the normal BMI ranges. BFMI values were 2.9 to 5.0 kg/㎡ for men and 5.2 to 8.0 kg/㎡ for women within the normal BMI ranges. BFMI values were 6.0 and 9.2 kg/㎡ in men and women, r espectively, f or o bese BMI ( 25 kg/㎡). Normal r anges for %BF were 16.7 t o 22.6 a nd 2 8.0 to 3 4.3 for men and women, respectively. This study presents FFMI and BFMI values that correspond to low, normal, overweight, and obese BMIs. FFMI and BFMI provide information about body compartments regardless of height. The present data may be useful to health specialist as reference values for Korean population in comparing healthy and ill subjects of all ages and identifying body composition changes related to aging, malnutrition, and exercise training.
