ABSTRACT
Kim, J.H. Lim, I.S. The effects of overload exercise on the changes of EEG, blood growth hormone, and melatonin concentration during sleep. Exercise Science 12(2): 297-306, 2003. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of overload exercise on the changes of EEG, blood growth hormone, and melatonin level during sleep. The subjects were divided into control(placebo) and treat group(melatonin). The results are summarized as follows: 1)sleep onset latency and stage-1 sleep showed significant differences between group(p<.05). Namely, stage-1 sleep time significantly decreased in treat than control group. 2)stage-2, SWS, and REM sleep time showed no significant differences among groups(p>.05). 3)blood growth hormone and melatonin level was significantly increased remarkably in treat than control group(p<.05). Overload exercise induced harmful effects on sleep and hormone. The sleep process initiated under the influence of melatonin appears to have a shorter sleep onset latency and stage-1 sleep time. In conclusion, melatonin treatment may help in the prevention of the sleep disturbed following overload exercise.
Key words: Sleep, Overload Exercise, Melatonin, Growth Hormone
