The correlation between regional bone mineral status, body composition, and muscle strength of pre andpostmenopausal women
ABSTRACT
Kim, H.D., Nho, H.S. The correlation between regional bone mineral status, body composition, and muscle strength of pre and postmenopausal women. Exercise Science, 14(3): 347-358, 2005. The bone mineral status is influenced mainly by genetic factors and gender. The muscle strength is also regarded as predictive factor to the bone mineral density. Therefore, the present study was designed to investigate the correlation between muscle strength and body composition and bone mineral status. The subjects consists of 71 adults premenopausal and postmenopausal women. The subjects were tested for anthropometry. At the same time the total and regional BMD, wholel body FFM and FM were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptionmetry(DEXA). Isokinetic knee flexion and extension peak torque was measured using a Cybex 770 dynamometer, and grip strength using hand grip strength dynamometer. As expected, premenopausal women had more FFM, and higher bone mineral status. Correlation analyses showed that whole body BMD of premenopausal women was correlated with fat free mass and knee peak torque, left arm BMD with FFM, left leg with FFM and asymmetric knee peak torque, and hip BMD with FFM. In the mean time left arm BMD of post menopausal women was correlated with knee peak torque. In conclusion FFM of postmenopausal women is believed to the best factor predictive to BMD. The effect of muscle strength is systemic rather than site-specific to the regional BMD. However, the relationship of BMD with body composition and muscle strength is attenuated with menopausal status.
Key words: bone mineral density, grip strength, isokinetic peak torque, body composition
