The Effect of Sodium Bicarbonate Ingestion on Anaerobic Power and Blood Lactate with Elite Taekwondo Athleticbefore and after Reduction of Weight during intermittent high-intensity Exercise
ABSTRACT
Cho, K.J. The Effect of Sodium Bicarbonate Ingestion on Anaerobic Power and Blood Lactate with Elite Taekwondo Athletic before and after Reduction of Weight during intermittent high-intensity Exercise. Exercise Science, 14(3): 323-336, 2005.The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of rest and intermittent high exercise before and after reduction of weight with alkalosis induced sodium bicarbonate(Na2HCO3) injection on anaerobic power and blood lactate. Healthy high school-aged males(n=20, career: 5yr.) were participated in Wingate test before and after reduction of weight. The subjects were divided into two groups; control groups(n=10, placebo), experimental group(n=10, bicarbonate ) by pre experiment. To investigate the effect of rest and intermittent high exercise before and after reduction of weight on anaerobic power were measured at main experimentⅠ(pre-test), Ⅱ(post-test) and to investigate blood lactate were measured at rest, immediately before exercise and immediately after exercise. Venous blood were drawn at the forearm antecubital vein at rest, before and after exercise. The results were summarized as follows: First, there was no significant differences of anaerobic power among three measurement time, before and after reduction of weight, but there was between control and experimental group, before and after reduction of weight(P<.05). Second, there was significant differences of blood lactate between two groups at after exercise and blood sampling time at before and after exercise, before and after reduction of weight(P<.05). Therefore, because it was impossible for alkalosis induced sodium bicarbonate intake during the rest and intermittent high exercise before and after reduction of weight to compensate for physiological function drop, it was found that sodium bicarbonate was useful as physiological active agent for performance improvement of Taekwondo and weigh-in game.
Key words: sodium Bicarbonate, Weight reduction, Anaerobic power, Blood Lactate, Alkalosis, Intermittent high Exercise.
