The effect of β-alanine ingestion with training on exercise performance and skeletal muscle fiber characteristics in cyclists
ABSTRACT
Kim, H.J. Son, H.J., Lee, Y.W. Kim, C.K. The effect of β-alanine ingestion with training on exercise performance and skeletal muscle fiber characteristics in cyclists. Exercise Science, 14(4): 515-524, 2005.This study was performed to investigate the effect of β-alanine ingestion with combined training on exercise performance capacity and skeletal muscle fiber characteristics in trained cyclist(19-22yrs, n=12). The β-alanine was ingested 3 times a day and combined exercise training was performed for 12 weeks (endurance training; 5hours/d, 6 days/wk, weight training; 3days/wk). All subjects were divided into 2 groups; ingestion group (4.8g/d + training, n=6) and placebo group (4.8g/d + training, n=6). Cross sectional area of type II muscle fiber was increased by 12 weeks of training in both two groups. Anaerobic threshold (AT), exercise duration, and total work capacity of knee flexors of ingestion group were .significantly increased after training (p<.05). Whereas, there were no significant differences in mean power or peak power. However, significant increase of power output were observed in 30-35sec and 50-55sec phases after training in ingestion group (p<.05). In conclusion, the present study demonstrated that the increase in buffering capacity with β-alanine ingestion is likely to contribute to both aerobic and anaerobic exercise performance.
Key words: β-alanine, buffering capacity, exercise performance, skeletal muscle
