The effect of properties on stretch-shortening cycle exercise on investigate the influence of achilles tendon elastic
ABSTRACT
Yoon, S.J. The effect of properties on stretch-shortening cycle exercise on investigate the influence of achilles tendon elastic. Exercise Science, 14(4): 525-534. 2005. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of achilles tendon elastic properties on stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) exercise like countermovement rebound jumping. Six male subjects performed squat jump (SJ), counter movement jump (CMJ), and five continuous repetition rebound jumps (RJ). Elongation of the tendon and aponeurosis of medial head of gastrocnemius muscle was directly measured by ultrasonography, while subjects performed isometric plantar flexion up to the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). The relationship between measured muscle force and achilles tendon elongation was fitted to a linear regression above 20%MVC, the slope of which was defined as stiffness of the achilles tendon structure. Jumping height in SJ, CMJ, and RJ were 37.8±6.4cm, 45.2±5.8cm, and 36.1±9.1cm, respectively. Prestretch augmentation (={(CMJ-SJ)/SJ}*100) was 20.7±10.5%. The stiffness of achilles tendon structure was 17.8±5.4N/mm. There was no significant correlations between the stiffness and jumping height in SJ and CMJ. However, the stiffness was negative significant related to jumping height in RJ and prestretch augmentation (P<0.05). These results indicated that the stiffness of achilles tendon structure has a favorable effect on SSC exercise in explosive movements like RJ.
Key words: gastrocnemius muscle, stretch-shortening cycle exercise, stiffness, length-tension relationship, ultrasonography
