Park, D.H., Kim, C.S., Joung, D.S., Sung, B.J., Kim, Y.S. The relationship between 5-HTT gene polymorphism and endurance performance. Exercise Science, 14(2): 171-180, 2005. To determine whether serotonin transporter (5-HTT) gene polymorphism could be associated with sports aptitude in endurance performance, polymorphisms in the 5-HTT were determined in genormic DNA obtained from 273 control participants (CON), Forty-two elite long distance runners (ELDR), and thirty-four elite short distance runners (ELDR). The genotypic frequencies of 5-HTT-SS, LS, and LL were significantly differences between the CON (SS: 62.7%, LS: 30.0%, LL: 7.3%) and ELDR (SS: 71.4%, LS: 28.6%, LL: 0%, p< .05) as well as between the ELDR and ESDR (SS: 61.76%, LS: 26.47%, LL: 11.77%, p< .05), respectively. In addition, the genotypic frequencies in the CON group as a general population conformed to the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (X2= 2.559, d.f.= 2, p= .278). According to our results, the interesting finding was that nobody in the ELDR has LL genotype. Consequently, these results suggested that the 5-HTTLPR genotype might be associated with the capacity of endurance performance. |
