Development and verification of 1-RM prediction equation of lat pull down, biceps curl and triceps extension by anthropometric and basic fitness variables for adult males
ABSTRACT

Exercise Science. 15(4): 347-356, 2006. The purpose of this study were to develop 1-RM prediction equation of lat pull down, biceps curl and triceps extension by anthropometric and basic fitness variables, and to verify the equation by the verify group. Trained adult males of development group(n=40) and verification group(n=17) were evaluated for height, weight, BMI, % fat, LBM, 8 skinfolds, 7 circumferences of anthropometric variables, and left and right grip strength, back strength, stand and reach, standing long jump on basic fitness variables. The 1st equation of lat pull down was “y = - 54.973 + 4.545 × forearm girth”(r2=0.514, p<.01), the 2nd equation was “y = - 48.074 + 1.968 × forearm girth + 0.138 × back strength + 1.839 × BMI”(r2=0.672, p<.01). The 1st equation of biceps curl was “y = - 27.218 + 2.251 × forearm girth”(r2=0.431, p<.01), the 2nd equation was “y = - 48.074 + 1.968 × forearm girth + 0.138 × back strength + 1.839 × BMI”(r2=0.672, p<.01). The 1st equation of triceps extension “y = - 42.400 - .171 × weight + 2.702 × upper arm girth”(r2=0.480, p<.01), the 2nd equation “y = - 22.057 + 3.270 × right grip strength - 0.652 BMI”(r2=0.513, p<.01). As a results of verification, there were not significant difference between measured 1-RM and predicted 1-RM for all of 3 movement. The equations of Lat pull down were overestimate a little 1.41-1.48kg(2.06-2.15%). The equations of biceps curl were underestimate a little 0.08-1.41kg(0.22-4.38%). The equations of triceps extension were underestimate a little 3.42-3.48kg(9.94-10.08%). It was concluded that the satisfied 1-RM equation of lat pull down, biceps curl and triceps extension were made by anthropometric and basic fitness variables only for trained adult males.
