Kang, S.J. The effects of vinyasa and Hatha yoga on the risk factors of cardiovascular disease. Exercise Science, 15(3): 193-200. 2006. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of Vinyasa and Hatha yoga on the risk factors of cardiovascular disease. Nineteen healthy women (M=41.4±4.0) trained 60 min per day ,3 times per week for 12 weeks. The subjects were randomly assigned to either a Vinyasa yoga group (G1, n=10) or a Hatha yoga group (G2, n=9). Body weight, percent of body weight, RPP(Rate -Pressure-Product), blood pressure, maximal oxygen uptake(VO2max), resting heart rate, resting heart rate variability, blood lipids(TC, HDL-C, LDL-C, TG), inflammation markers(CRP, Fibrinogen) were measured and compared before and after intervention. In order to analyze HRV, RMSSD by time domain method, and LF, HF by frequency domain method were utilized. Two-way ANOVA for repeated measures were performed on all variables. Results showed that percent of body fat(Sig=.017), RPP(Sig=.000), diastolic blood pressure(Sig=.002), VO2max(Sig=.019), HDL-C(Sig=.008), CRP(Sing=.036O, RMSSD(Sig=.031) variables within the groups were affected by yoga training. CRP showed significant differences between the groups(Sing=.047). In conclusion these results demonstrate that Vinyasa and Hatha yoga produce positive effects on reducing risk factors of cardiovascular disease. Moreover, yoga type affects significant effect on CRP. |
