ABSTRACT
Baek, S.S., Kim, Y.M., Joo, K.J., Ko, I.G., Kim, C.J. Effects of enriched environment including voluntary wheel running on short-term memory and neurogenesis in the hippocampal dentate gyrus of mice with streptozotocin-induced diabetes. Exercise Science. 15(3): 259-268, 2006. Exposure to an enriched environment and physical activity, such as voluntary running, increases neurogenesis of granule cells in the dentate gyrus of mice. Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common metabolic disorders in humans. In the present study, the effects of enriched environment including voluntary wheel running on short-term memory and neurogenesis in the hippocampal dentate gyrus of the mice with streptozotocin(STZ)-induced diabetes was investigated via step-down avoidance task and 5-bromo- 2'-deoxyuridine(BrdU)-specific immunohistochemistry. Male IRC mice were randomly divided into the four groups: the control group, the STZ-induced diabetes group, STZ-induced diabetes with voluntary wheel running group, and the STZ-induced diabetes with enriched environment including voluntary wheel running group. The mice in all of the groups were intraperitoneally injected with 50 mg/kg BrdU once a day for 4 weeks. In the present results, the STZ-induced diabetic mice showed decreased neurogenesis in the hippocampal dentate gyrus, whereas exposure to enriched environment including voluntary wheel running increased neurogenesis in the STZ-induced diabetic mice. The latency in the STZ-induced diabetes group was shorter than the control group. Enriched environment including voluntary wheel running exceedingly delayed the latency of mice in the STZ-induced diabetic groups. Therefore, it can be suggested that enriched environment including voluntary wheel running may enhance brain function via increasing neurogenesis in the diabetic patients.
