Effects of dance sports training on body composition, blood lipids, and insulin resistance in elderly women
ABSTRACT
The study was designed to examine the effects of 9 weeks of dance sports training on body composition, aerobic capacity, blood lipids, and insulin resistance. Twenty-four elderly women were assigned to one of two groups, i.e., dance sports training group(TR: n=14) and control group(CON: n=10). Subjects in TR participated in dance sports for 40 minutes/day and three times/wk for 9 weeks, whereas subjects in CON were asked to maintain normal lifestyle during the same intervention period. Variables related to body composition, aerobic capacity, blood lipid, and insulin resistance were measured and compared between pre- and post-test as well as between TR and CON utilizing two-way ANOVA with repeated measures. Main results of the present study were as follows: 1) Body weight, body fat, percent body fat, and BMI decreased significantly in TR, whereas there were no significant changes in the variables in CON. 2) VO2max tended to increase in TR, whereas it decreased significantly in CON. 3) TC and LDL-C decreased significantly in TR. 4) Although no significant changes were found in variables regarding insulin resistance in TR and CON, HOMA-IR tended to decrease in TR. It was concluded that the 9 weeks of dance sports training would have positive effects on body composition and aerobic capacity in elderly women. In addition, the training would have possibility to have positive effects on enhancing insulin resistance in elderly women.
