Effects of treadmill exercise on MCTs and LDH expression of heart tissue in the streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.
ABSTRACT
We examined the changes in monocarboxylate transporter 1 (MCT1) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) isozymes in heart in sedentary control and streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats (4 wk) and in trained (4 wk) control and STZ-induced diabetic animals. In nondiabetic animals, training increased MCT1 in the heart muscles (p<.05). LDH B4 was increased in the heart muscles (p<.05). In sedentary diabetic animals, MCT1 was reduced in the heart muscles (p<.05). LDH B4 content was also reduced in sedentary diabetic animals in the heart muscles (p<.05). In contrast, in trained diabetic animals, MCT 1 and LDH B4 in heart muscle were markedly greater than in the sedentary diabetic animals (p<.05). These studies have shown that 1) with STZ-induced diabetes, MCT1 and LDH B4 are reduced in the heart and 2) exercise training alleviated these diabetes induced reductions.
