Shin S.A. Effects of a 12-wk dance sport program on body composition, bone mineral density, plasma lipids and plasma apolipoproteins in postmenopausal women with and without hormone replacement therapy. Exercise Science, 14(3): 313- 322, 2005. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of a 12-wk dance sport program on body composition, bone mineral density, plasma lipids, and plasma apolipoproteins in postmenopausal women with and without hormone replacement therapy(HRT). HRT(n=7) and non-HRT(NHRT)(n=7) women voluntarily participated in the study. Measured body composition variables included weight, height, fat mass, fat free mass, waist circumference, and body mass index. Bone mineral density was measured by using computerized tomography (Hitachi, Japan). Total cholesterol(TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDLC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDLC), triglyceride (TG), apolipoprotein(apo) A and B, and lipoprotein (Lp)a concentrations were measured in fasting plasma. All the variables were measured at baseline and following the 12-wk dance sport program. Two-way ANOVA was used to compare any significant differences in pre-to-post changes of measured variables between NHRT and HRT groups at p=0.05. At baseline, there were no significant differences in body composition variables between NHRT and HRT groups, while the HRT group had a significantly higher apoB concentration than the NHRT group. Following the 12-wk dance sport program, the NHRT group had greater improvements in fat mass, percent body fat, and waist-to-hip ratio than the HRT group, while the HRT group had a significantly lower apoB concentration than the NHRT group. In conclusion, these findings suggest that dance sport program can be used as a means to improve body composition and blood lipids and apolipoproteins profiles in postmenopausal women, while the degree of its benefits appear to be influenced by HRT. |
