Kim, T.U., Park. T.G., Park, C.H., Kim, J.W., Kim, H.J., Yang, Y.O. Effects of a 12-week weight-loss program on homocysteine and C-reactive protein in obese middle school girls. Exercise Science, 15(4), 309-317, 2006. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of 12 weeks weight-loss program including walking and behavior modification on homocysteine (Hcy), C-reactive protein (CRP), and to analyze association between the changes of body composition, traditional cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors and the changes of Hcy and CRP in obese middle school girls. Forty participants (body mass index[BMI]≥95th percentile) were randomly allocated to experimental group (EG, n=19) and control group (CG, n=21). There were no changes on Hcy and CRP levels in the experimental group after intervention. But the change of CRP level was significant difference between groups after intervention (p<.05). Also there was significant correlation with between CRP and fat mass (r=0.35), systolic blood pressure (r=0.38) at base line, and the change of CRP was correlated with the change of BMI (r=0.46). However Hcy was not any relationship with body composition and CVD risk factors. In conclusion, weight-loss program can be useful intervention for the improvement on body composition, CVD risk factors and CRP in obese adolescent girls. However there was no change in Hcy; therefore there may be involved in unknown metabolic factors which are associated with the change of Hcy. |
