ABSTRACT
Effect of endurance treadmill exercise on motor, emotional, and cognitive functions in developing rats with maternal infection -induced cerebral palsy. Exercise Science. 18(3): 401-408, 2009. In the present study, we investigated the effect of endurance treadmill exercise on motor, emotional, and cognitive function in developing rats with maternal infection-induced cerebral palsy. In this study, the cerebral palsy was induced by intraperitoneal injection of lipopolysaccharide 0.15 mg/kg to the pregnant rats at gestation day 15, 17, and 20. The treadmill exercise load consisted of running at a speed of 8 m/min in the mild exercise group and 14 m/min in the moderate exercise group for 30 min once a day during 4 weeks. The present results showed that induction of cerebral palsy did not affect emotional function, however, it decreased motor and cognitive function. Endurance treadmill exercise ameliorated the disturbance of cognitive function induced cerebral palsy. These results suggest that endurance treadmill exercise may be used for the treatment of cerebral palsy to improve cognitive function.
